While the RDAA welcomed the announcement of additional spending on some areas of mental health in the 2011-2012 Federal Budget, we were dismayed to see that the Government proposed to fund this additional spending by reducing funding for mental health support delivered by GPs by cuts to funding for MBS items under the Better Access initiative.

RDAA lodged a submission in response to the Department of Health and Ageing's discussion paper on Lead Clinician Groups (LCGs). The submission indicated that RDAA welcomes any initiative that purports to enhance clinical leadership and engagement in the health care system, but stressed that LCGs should not duplicate the myriad of existing consultative processes for clinicians and for local clinicians to be appointed to the governing councils of Local Hospital Networks.

RDAA has provided a submission in response to the discussion paper entitled Connecting Health Services with the Future: Modernising Medicare by Providing Rebates for Online Consultations. One of the key points made in the submission is that online consultations should only be viewed as an adjunct to rural general and specialist practice and not as an alternative to face-to-face consultations.

The Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan MP, has invited Australian families, individuals, businesses and community groups to submit their ideas and priorities for the 2011-2012 Federal Budget.
The key focus of the RDAA’s pre-budget submission for 2011-2012 is the need for more targeted incentives and programs to attract and retain doctors to rural and remote areas.
